The Long a-la Mode

"The Long a-la mode" is a ballad written by Dirk McQuickly (credited to Nasty-McQuickly) that originally appeared on the Rutles' Let It Rot album.

Writing[]

Dirk got the inspiration for the song at his farm at Scotland. Upset by the growing tensions among the Rutles, Dirk sat down on his piano and tried to think of the only thing that could make him feel better: a huge pie a la mode. He then started playing and singing about this food, resulting in The Long a-la Mode. Thinking the idea was absurd, some studio guy added a full orchestra to the song and when Dirk first heard it, he was so outraged that the Rutles broke up nine seconds later, with a series of lawsuits following. The intended version was released on Let it Rot... Naked.
